Not every business has the ability to overhaul its identity overnight. But small, intentional decisions made consistently can create significant change. Consistency beats intensity almost every time.
Simply choosing a path that helps you stand out is progress. Standing out isn’t about overhaul, rebellion, or the volume of change. As Lao Tzu said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”
A step without direction only creates movement, not progress.
Identity Changes Outcome
Perception shapes expectation, and expectation shapes experience. Some brands appear to stumble into memorability, but it’s rarely accidental.
Most of us aren’t working with companies as large as Dr. Pepper, but they’re still a useful example. They’re well known for recognizing and capitalizing on cultural moments. When flavored soda combinations began gaining popularity, Dr. Pepper responded by releasing their own variations—keeping attention and demand within their ecosystem.
More recently, after a TikTok went viral in which a woman suggested a jingle for Dr. Pepper, the brand quickly turned it into a fully produced commercial. That didn’t happen by chance. It happened because the brand was prepared to act.
So how are you capitalizing on moments? Are you positioning your brand to recognize them? Or better yet, to create them?
Choosing with Intent
As you look to brand yourself or your business, clarity matters. Vagueness is expensive. Who are you trying to attract, serve, or sell to? If you try to reach everyone, you resonate with no one.
So where do you want to go? Who do you want to be perceived as? Which path are you going to take? Knowing who you are removes uncertainty and makes it easier to connect with your audience.
Everyone ends up somewhere. Very few arrive there by accident.
